Welcome to our lab!
Our lab studies how the brain understands and produces language, and how these processes are influenced by properties of languages and individual differences across the lifespan. A central thread connecting most of the projects in our lab is individual variation: how linguistic experience and cognitive abilities contribute to differences in language performance, particularly as we age. Combining behavioural experiments with EEG and fMRI, we use both carefully controlled tasks and more naturalistic language experiences. Our goal is to understand language as a dynamic interaction between the properties of the languages we speak, our experiences using them, and the brain’s changing cognitive capacities across the lifespan.

October 2026
Our lab participated in the HKU Information Day sharing our research with the community. Prof. Momenian gave a talk to the public about how our languages are processed in the brain. The title of his talk was "The organ that talks to itself: a tour through language and the brain labyrinth"!Â
November 2025
The lab was established in November 2025, following the appointment of Dr. Mohammad Momenian at HKU Linguistics.
